Bridges into Engineering & Computer Science – programs at Wright College

See below for information about a couple of programs at Wright College, both designed to prepare students who complete a 2-year program at Wright for a successful transfer to a 4-year institution. This is good information for 12th graders who might be interested.

The second page has details about the program that is specific to CS. They have a focus on making the college experience successful for students who are historically underrepresented in CS / engineering, and offer a lot of supports to participants (tuition fee waivers, tutoring, professional memberships, etc.).

Not mentioned in the flyer: Wright is also providing 25 scholarships for their summer Bridge program specifically for CS students.

The first page is a program whose key feature is guaranteed admission to the Grainger College of Engineering at UIUC, one of the top engineering schools in the country. There is a higher GPA hurdle for that one.

They are holding a number of information sessions (hybrid in-person / Zoom), the first of which will be October 21.

Free Discover Computing Series for 9th and 10th Grade First-Gen Students and Students of Color

Nicki Anselmo from Google is working with Gina Grant at Discovery Partners Institute and Doris Espirtu at Wright Community College to offer a 5-session free Saturday series for 9th and 10th graders. The first session is this Saturday, the 16th, but we’re also willing to enroll students who are able to start next Saturday, the 23rd.

More details below! Please reach out with any questions.

The Discovery Partners Institute (DPI), Wilbur Wright College, and Google Chicago are joining forces to offer a new program series, called Discover Computing, to build a deeper and more diverse pool of students pursuing computer science and tech pathways in Illinois.

Discover Computing 1 will be offered for FREE on Saturdays (October 16 – November 13) from 9 AM – 1 PM for high school freshmen and sophomores. These sessions will be held in person at DPI’s downtown office (200 S. Wacker, 4th Floor).

UIUC School of Art & Design at the Chicago National Portfolio Day

Consider participation in one of the nation’s largest portfolio days presented by the National Portfolio Day Association taking place this weekend in Chicago.

Helping students follow their passion is what the College of Fine & Applied Arts (FAA) at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign does best, thus we encourage your students to visit with faculty from our School of Art & Design at this engaging event.

Sunday, October 17, 2021, 12-4 p.m. (CT)
SAIC – School of the Art Institute of Chicago
280 S. Columbus Dr.
Chicago, IL 60603

RSVP required at nationalportfolioday.org

*Please note that all participants will be required to be vaccinated, wear a mask for the entirety of the event, and only one guest per registered student will be admitted.

Representatives from over 50 nationally accredited art schools and universities will be on hand to discuss student work and assist them in pursuing an education in the visual arts.

High school students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and college transfer students are encouraged to attend this four-hour educational event, created for emerging visual artists and designers. Representatives from colleges of art and design will review artwork, discuss programs, and answer questions about creative and professional careers.

This is an educational event—no admissions decisions or scholarship awards will be offered. Portfolios should include student’s best and most recent work, but can also include works in progress, sketchbooks, and tear sheets—it is not necessary to mat or frame work. Students should bring original artwork whenever possible, and keep their presentation simple, as the work itself is what is important.

Chicago Architecture Foundation – Fall 2021 BP Student Ideas Competition

ANNOUNCING THE FALL 2021 BP STUDENT IDEAS COMPETITION

The bp Student Ideas Competition at the Chicago Architecture Biennial is accepting submissions from 7th-12th grade Chicagoland and NW Indiana students now through December 6, 2021. The competition is free to enter and winners will receive cash prizes up to $300, tablets, and more. The fall challenge—inspired by the 2021 edition The Available City—invites students to respond to one of three prompts:

Design a collective space for exchanges / exchanging
Exchanges could be large or small markets in one location, or a number of spaces spread out across a larger area. The space can be for the exchange of goods, services, knowledge, or something else.
Individual submissions only.

Design a collective space for plants / planting
The presence of plants—or a lack thereof—impacts us in significant ways. By planting, we can learn and labor together, forming connections between each other and our production.
Individual submissions only.

Design a collective space for commons / commoning
Commons are spaces or resources that are shared by groups of people. Commons can be natural (land, water, air) or cultural (languages, libraries, history).
Individual and team submissions accepted.

The bp Student Ideas Competition offers an opportunity to engage youth voices as part of the global conversations at the heart of the Biennial. The competition welcomes submissions that explore ideas about architecture and design presented through any medium or discipline including the humanities, visual and performing arts, writing, and STEM fields. Strong entries will be unique, imaginative, thoughtfully executed, and community specific.
