Girls Who Code Informational Event

My name is Miya Newman and I am president of Girls Who Code, a club at Lane working to mend the gender gap in STEM through mentorship and education. With that being said, tomorrow (3/17) we are hosting an event open to all girls at Lane grades 9-11. The event’s purpose is to promote the Summer Immersion Program and encourage girls to apply. Event Description:
Calling all empowered women or non-binary students who are interested in coding!! Or anyone who is desperately looking for intensive summer programs to put on their college applications!! Apply for the 100% free Girls Who Code Summer Programs that are going to be ongoing from June 17 – August 12 by joining Lane Tech’s Girls Who Code club this Thursday in Room 235. Free food and drinks will be provided to anyone that decides to stop by!

The 2-week Summer Immersion Program (SIP) is Girls Who Code’s main program for current 9th-11th graders to join live virtual classrooms led by industry-leading companies like EA, Pfizer, and ViacomCBS. You’ll learn web design and coding by building impactful projects you care about through HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You’ll even get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the coolest companies in the business. Plus, all SIP students can apply for need-based grants up to $500 for completing the program!

The Self-Paced Program is an alternative option that gives current 9th-12th graders the flexibility to earn beginner-level badges in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for web development or an intermediate-level badge in Python for cybersecurity through independent study and real-world projects.

PAID Software Development Apprenticeship (seniors not starting a 4-year college program)

SDA – SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT APPRENTICESHIP – CCC-C4ITA

The Software Development Apprenticeship at Wilbur Wright College is a 2-year Apprenticeship for students that have an interest, aptitude, and some previous exposure to technology. Apprentice will be enrolled in courses at Wright College while getting on-the-job training, (20 hours per week) with a participating IT company.

Students that apply will undergo a process and interview with several companies until they receive a final offer of employment as an Apprentice. All participants will be on track to earning an Associate Degree in Software Development and be eligible to convert to full time employees with companies they work with during the apprenticeship period.

The SDA program is a partnership between Wilbur Wright College of City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) and Center for IT Talent Acceleration (C4ITA).

Why Software Development?

  • Software developers are in high demand.
  • A software development degree is a pipeline to a career as a software engineer.

Application Deadline:

Early deadline: Mar 31, 2022 (Becomes eligible for summer program)

Regular deadline: May 15, 2022

Start Date is August 2022 (2-year apprenticeship that is eligible to convert to full time at the end of the apprenticeship period.)

Basic Qualifications:

  • Interested in technology career
  • On Track to graduate from high school (Class of 2022) OR 2021/2020 graduates.
  • Completed computer classes/experience (ex: classes, camp, school project or competition)
  • Application Development experience (ex: created an app or completed one computer science project (preferred)
  • College-ready in English and Math
  • Demonstrated passion for the technology field (i.e. Computer Science Club, CS coursework, etc.)

Will I have student support through the program?

The apprenticeship team, Wilbur Wright team along with our nonprofit partner C4ITA will provide student support

Compensation and Benefits for Apprentices:

  • Compensation – $21/hour
  • Benefits – Tuition can be covered by financial aid, scholarships and/or by participating companies during the apprenticeship (or a combination).
  • Advance career goals
  • Gain industry-related work experience
  • Opportunity to gain full-time employment at the completion of the program
  • Access to invested employers
