Event: The Black Experience in Design

The Black Experience in Design – Wednesday 2.1.21, 7-8:30pm PST

Excluded from traditional design history and educational canons that heavily favor European modernist influences, the work and experiences of Black designers have been systematically overlooked in the profession for decades. One year ago, The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection was published as the leading anthology on the topic, spotlighting over 70 Black designers, artists, curators, educators, students, and researchers, who represent a wide cross-section of Black diasporic identities and multi-disciplinary practices.

Join Kareem Collie, co-editor of The Black Experience in Design and former Hive faculty, for an evening of candid and thought-provoking conversation with Lesley-Ann Noel, Jennifer White-Johnson, Quinlin Messenger, and Chris Rudd. This is a hybrid event with pizza for in-person attendees! Everyone will be entered into a raffle to win a copy of The Black Experience in Design book!

This is a free event, but registration is required: https://colleges.claremont.edu/thehive/event/the-black-experience-in-design-w-kareem-collie/

UW Madison Free summer camp opportunity

The University of Wisconsin–Madison is offering a free opportunity for high school students interested in math, science, and engineering called ProCSI-H: Promoting the Computational Science Initiative High School (pronounced “Proxy H”).

ProCSI-H is an annual, free, week-long camp offered at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. While ProCSI-H is open to all students, we hope you will encourage first-generation and minority students going into their 10th, 11th, or 12th grade to apply. One of our biggest goals with ProCSI-H is to engage students with limited exposure to STEM in an exciting, hands-on way to stimulate passion, creativity, and curiosity.

Participants attend lectures on a range of engineering-related topics, tour campus and lab spaces, participate in hands-on activities, and experience campus life during this fun-filled week. Students will also be provided with housing at dorms and food at university dining halls, both at no cost.

ProCSI-H 2023 will be held from July 16th to July 21st, 2023. Instructions for the application form are available online at https://sbel.wisc.edu/procsi-h/.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email uwprocsi@gmail.com with the subject line “ProCSI-H 2023” and include the school’s name.
